Compulsory Basic Training
All learner motorcyclists and moped riders must complete CBT. The DSA administers the syllabus that must be taught and generally the course takes between 6-8 hours. The training allows you to safely learn: motorcycling theory, skills that will make you safe on the road and the correct attitude towards motorcycling. On completion, candidates are issued with a Certificate of Completion (DL196) and this is valid for 2 years.
125 (Category A) Test Training
This course can be taken from the age of 17 on a 125cc motorcycle. On passing the test the rider will be able to remove ‘L’ plates and ride any motorcycle not exceeding 33bhp and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg for a period of 2 years. After this period the rider automatically has an unrestricted motorcycle licence and may ride any motorcycle.
Direct Access Scheme (DAS)
This option is for riders over 21 years old. The training and test is taken on a motorcycle of at least 35kW (46.6bhp).
We have a wide range of machines available for which can cater for individuals specific requirements. On passing the test the rider gains full licence entitlement and can ride any motorcycle.
Please note that the motorcycle theory test will have to be taken and passed before commencement of training for 125/DAS test. This is because the motorcycle riding test usually takes place the day after your last day of training. The theory test is administered by the DSA and can be booked on telephone number 08700 101372.
The DSA, along with the motorcycle industry, has put together a new package of training known as the Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS).
The scheme is beneficial to all bike riders who have a full motorcycle licence, no matter what size of bike, or the experience level of the rider. There is no test involved and if you have no significant areas of weakness, the trainer will give you a DSA Certificate of Competence – Enhanced Rider Bonus. You can then get an insurance discount from one of the many insurers who have signed up to support the scheme.
If you do have areas that would benefit from further training, you would qualify for your certificate after successfully completing the recommended training. By having your riding ability assessed, we can tailor a development programme to suit your needs.
